11.29 hectares of crystalline water in the middle of the desert

Semana Magazine highlighted the Crystal Lagoons project in Egypt, Citystars Sharm El Sheik, qualifying it as “an architectural masterpiece that not only redefines the concept of luxury but is also a testament to innovation and sustainability in the development of aquatic megastructures.”

Unique and value-added technology

This project was made possible thanks to Crystal Lagoons® technology, which added real estate value to the development by taking water from underground aquifers with no other use and incorporating it into undeveloped desert lands.

Miguel Ángel Cabañas, Regional Director of Crystal Lagoons, emphasizes that “Crystal Lagoons® technology -patented in 180 countries- solves what was previously technically impossible: building turquoise water lagoons of unlimited size anywhere in the world, even in the middle of the desert. Today, we can bring the idyllic beach experience to unexpected places, earning global recognition”.

Guinness World Records.

Located in Egypt, in the middle of the Sinai desert, this 11.29-hectare turquoise body of water has been considered since 2015 the largest crystalline lagoon in the world by Guinness World Records.

Citystars Sharm El Sheikh is the second Guinness World Record for Crystal Lagoons. The first was obtained by San Alfonso del Mar in 2007, with its iconic lagoon of 8 hectares and 1 kilometer in length, marking a milestone for the multinational water innovation company.

Sustainability as a key factor

One of the key aspects that sets crystalline lagoons apart is their sustainability. Their main features include:

  • Uses up to 100 times fewer chemicals
  • Require only 2% of the energy needed by conventional pool filtration systems
  • The lagoons can be filled with fresh, salt, or brackish water
  • They use 40% less water than a green area of the same size and 33 times less water than an 18-hole golf course

Crystal Lagoons® technology has been internationally recognized for its sustainable contributions thanks to these unique characteristics.
