Crystal Lagoons Revolutionizes the Data Center Industry with Cooling Technology

7 March, 2025 / News
  • Innovation enables sustainable data center cooling while heating monumental crystalline lagoons

Today, there are approximately 8,000 data centers worldwide, and their construction is increasing exponentially. The major challenge facing this strategic industry is how to meet the massive energy demand required for their operation.

What is the Solution for data center cooling?

After transforming the real estate market and cities with its Public Access Lagoons® projects, also known as PAL®, Crystal Lagoons has launched a new area of innovation that enables the sustainable cooling of data centers while also heating large-scale crystalline lagoons. These lagoons will feature both a traditional beach area and a warm water zone, maintaining temperatures between 98.6 and 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, allowing for year-round use, even at night.

This pioneering technology, called Eco-Heated Lagoons, is revolutionizing data center cooling, providing a high-impact sustainable solution with global reach, as highlighted by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham).

What are the benefits of this technology?

Some of the benefits of Crystal Lagoons cooling technology are:

  1. Energy Savings
  2. Reduced Carbon Footprint
  3. Enhanced Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE)
  4. High-Quality Water for Cooling
  5. Carbon Credits and Incentives
  6. Waste-Heat Utilization
  7. Facilitated Project Approvals

Is there a data center cooling project by Crystal Lagoons?

The multinational innovation company already has its first project underway. The system will be implemented in a Public Access Lagoons® development, specifically at Angel Lagoon in Texas. Crystal Lagoons is developing the complex in partnership with Land Tejas, a renowned U.S. real estate developer.

Details of the complex

The project is located in Dayton, just 40 minutes from Houston, and will feature an on-site 6 MW data center cooled by the 4.2-acre crystalline lagoon, which has already been inaugurated. Deep Green Energy, a subsidiary of the UK-based Octopus Energy, one of the world’s leading energy companies, will build and operate the data center.

“This is just the first project with Land Tejas, as Crystal Lagoons has an agreement to develop three additional PAL® complexes with this consortium, all in Texas, named Magnolia, Sierra Vista, and Fry Road, which will also include a data center,” explains Cristóbal Baixas, Director of Corporate Development at Crystal Lagoons.

How does Crystal Lagoons cooling technology work?

Crystal Lagoons amenities act as heat dissipators, providing sustainable cooling for data centers in a closed circuit, reducing energy consumption by 40% to 50% compared to traditional air-cooled chiller systems.

Additionally, this technology opens the door for any Crystal Lagoons project worldwide to feature heated lagoons by harnessing the waste heat generated by these data centers.
